Kouloura – Karamolegos Winery | Unique, complex and iconically Santorini
The Kouloura from Karamolegos Winery is a remarkable, rare expression of Assyrtiko from Santorini (PDO). The name refers to the traditional kouloura pruning method, in which the vines are trained like a basket on the ground to protect them from the strong wind and sun. This wine is powerful, complex and a pure reflection of the volcanic terroir.
Grapes & origin
100% Assyrtiko from very old vines trained by the traditional kouloura method on the volcanic soils of Santorini. The low yields give intensely concentrated grapes with pronounced minerality.
Vinification
The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks (sometimes partly in wood, depending on the vintage), followed by ageing on the fine lees (sur lie) for extra complexity and structure.
Tasting notes
Clear golden yellow. On the nose intense aromas of citrus, lime, ripe peach and wet stone, with a clear saline touch. On the palate powerful and layered, with lively acidity, pronounced minerality and a long, elegant finish.
Serving tips
Serve at 10–12 °C. Perfect with oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, ceviche or refined Mediterranean dishes. Also ideal for gastronomic pairings.
Cellaring
Excellent — 8 to 12 years or more. Develops more depth, complexity and honeyed notes with bottle age.
Taste & character
Full, balanced and made to be enjoyed.
Use & serving tip
Delicious with salads, mezze, grilled vegetables and fresh bread.
