Evangelo – Domaine Gerovassiliou | Powerful, rare and deeply complex

The Evangelo is one of the most remarkable red wines from Domaine Gerovassiliou — a powerful, opulent blend of Syrah and a small share of Viognier. The wine is a tribute to founder Evangelos Gerovassiliou and stands for his pursuit of top quality, precision and elegance.

Grapes & origin
A blend of Syrah (dominant) and a small percentage of Viognier from the estate’s own vineyards in Epanomi, near Thessaloniki. The proximity of the sea, sandy soils and low yields give a wine with both intensity and finesse.

Vinification
The Syrah and Viognier are fermented together (co-fermentation) in the northern Rhône style. The wine then ages for 18 to 24 months in new French oak barrels, followed by bottle ageing. The result is deep, complex and layered.

Tasting notes
Deep purple-red. On the nose powerful aromas of blackcurrant, violets, pepper, mocha, vanilla and leather. On the palate full and rich, with ripe tannins, a fresh structure and a long, velvety finish with notes of black cherry, spice and chocolate.

Serving tips
Serve at 17–18 °C. Decanting recommended, certainly for younger bottles. Perfect with game, beef, truffle risotto, lamb or hard matured cheeses. A genuinely gastronomic top wine.

Cellaring
Very great: 10 to 15 years (or more) — this wine develops beautifully with bottle age and becomes more complex over the years.
