Diamantopetra Red – Diamantakis Winery | Powerful, spicy and volcanic, from Crete
Diamantopetra Red is a modern, powerful red wine from Diamantakis Winery, a family business on the island of Crete. This expressive blend of Syrah and the indigenous Mandilaria produces a full, spicy wine with Mediterranean flair and mineral tension — a real find for lovers of characterful reds.
Grapes & origin
A blend of Syrah and Mandilaria from high-altitude vineyards (400–500 m) near Heraklion, Crete. The volcanic soils and mountainous terroir give the wine structure and freshness despite the warm climate.
Vinification
The grapes are hand-picked. After fermentation the wine ages for around 12 months in French oak barrels, partly new, which gives extra complexity and integration of fruit and oak.
Tasting notes
Deep ruby red. On the nose aromas of blackcurrant, plum, pepper, dried herbs and a hint of cedar. On the palate full and firm, with ripe tannins, lively acidity and a long, lightly smoky finish. The Syrah brings spice, the Mandilaria structure and Mediterranean character.
Serving tips
Serve at 17–18 °C. Decanting recommended. Excellent with grilled meat, lamb stew, dishes with rosemary or spicy cheeses. A wine with plenty of power and a clearly Cretan soul.
Cellaring
Very good — 6 to 8 years. Continues to develop in bottle towards softer tannins and greater complexity.
