Pure Greece in every drop
Authentic, fruity and of top Greek quality
The Alpha Estate Axia Red is an elegant, characterful red wine from Amyndeon, one of the most renowned wine regions of northern Greece. It combines modern winemaking with the distinctive character of Greek terroir. Because the vineyards lie at high altitude, the wine benefits from cool nights and slow ripening of the grapes, which gives finesse, balance and aromatic complexity. Axia Red is known for its rich flavour, refined structure and excellent harmony between fruit, spice and oak.
Grapes
The wine is made from a carefully composed blend of Xinomavro and Syrah. The Xinomavro gives the wine its typically Greek character, with lively acidity, elegance and aromas of red fruit and herbs. The Syrah adds extra power, depth, dark fruit tones and gentle spice. Together these grapes create a perfect balance between freshness, complexity and roundness.
Vinification
After hand-harvesting, the grapes are carefully selected and vinified separately. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures to preserve the aromatic intensity. The wine then ages for around 12 months in French oak barrels, followed by further ageing in bottle. This method gives extra complexity, soft tannins and a fine integration of oak and fruit.
Tasting notes
In the glass the wine shows a deep ruby red with purple nuances. The aroma is intense and complex, with notes of ripe cherry, blackberry, plum and forest fruits, complemented by vanilla, cocoa, black pepper, clove and subtle toast. On the palate the wine is full, velvety and balanced, with ripe tannins, refined acidity and a long, elegant finish.
Serving tips
Axia Red comes into its own with grilled red meat, lamb, game, stews, barbecue dishes, pasta with rich sauces and mature hard cheeses. Classic Greek dishes such as moussaka, pastitsio and spiced oven bakes also pair excellently. For the best experience, a serving temperature of 16–18 °C is recommended. Decanting the wine about half an hour before serving strengthens its aromas and complexity.
Cellaring
Thanks to its firm structure, lovely acidity and balanced tannins, this wine has excellent cellaring potential. Under good conditions the Alpha Estate Axia Red can develop for another 8 to 12 years in bottle, with the aromas gaining ever more depth and elegance.
