When people in ancient Greece used carob seeds to weigh gold, nobody could have imagined that the word “carat” — derived from “keration”, the Ancient Greek word for carob — would still be used thousands of years later as the worldwide unit for measuring the weight of gold. Carob is often called “the cocoa of the ancient Greeks” and has ever since been a healthy alternative to chocolate, with 60% fewer calories, no fat and far more fibre.

Today the carob tree, which flourishes and grows in abundance on the southern Greek island of Crete, travels north as a raw ingredient and is combined with PDO Corinthian raisins to produce a healthy, delicious and highly nutritious snack for the whole family. A classic Greek cookie to enjoy just as it is, with coffee or with your favourite hot drink.

Carob is a “superfood” because it is rich in carbohydrates and protein while containing virtually no fat. It is high in natural fibre and in vitamins A and B. Studies have shown that enriching food with insoluble carob fibre helps to lower cholesterol while improving bowel function.
