Today it is used in pharmaceuticals, perfume, cosmetics, drinks, baking, confectionery and in cooking. Chios mastic is the natural resin of Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia, a tree that grows only on the Aegean island of Chios in Greece. Scientific research shows that Chios mastic has anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and healing properties, and beneficial effects on the body as well as on hygiene and skin care. Small mastic tears are considerably harder than large ones and should not be chewed; they are used ground, and therefore for cooking or as a food supplement.
