The kartoutso (or katroutso) is a traditional measure and serving vessel for wine, used above all in tavernas. It is a metal jug — usually copper — holding about 250 ml, a quarter of a litre, although historically on the Ionian islands it was reckoned as 460 grams. Key characteristics:
- Origin: from the Venetian word quartuccio
- Use: serving house wine in tavernas
- Material: traditionally copper, but also aluminium or earthenware
- In names: there are tavernas carrying the same name, for instance in Livadeia or Palaio Faliro
In everyday speech it is often used when someone orders “a katroutso of wine”, roughly 250 ml.
